It's Over!
Not that I didn't enjoy every second of it, but as much as I loved seeing my son playing "real" baseball this year, I for one am so glad it is over!! We have done NOR T-ball 2 years in a row. It's a nice, affordable, comfortable program - One saturday a week for about an hour, for 5 weeks and it includes a shirt and hat. However, seeing as we've noticed some talent in our son's left handed pitch and his batting skills, we decided to try something a bit more challenging this year. So we signed him up for the Southwest Baseball League. And although it was worth it, it was a lot more work for us parents than I ever imagined it would be! The schedule was one weeknight practice, one weeknight game and one Saturday game each week, which occasionally could wind up as Thursday, Friday and Saturday, all in a row. Each meeting during the week was always scheduled during dinnertime, which is understandable, nonetheless, still a HUGE pain in the neck. It meant macaroni and cheese really quick at 4:30 in the afternoon, Granola Bars or Raisins in the car and ALWAYS eating out afterwards because we'd usually finish slightly after 7 p.m. in the evening. We needed cleats, a bat, a ball, red striped socks, a red belt and gray baseball pants - on top of the registration fee. But I promise you .. it was worth every penny! It was a great joy to see him progress throughout the 18 games. We loved watching him get "a big hit for us". Or cheer out their appreciation for the opposing team after the game. Of course Andrew's highlight of each game was the snack that followed..... I was just happy to be going home to rest so I could quit chasing the other children in a dirt lot filled with gopher holes. The biggest advantage was that I washed his laundry twice a week. Unfortunately it very often happened at the last minute so he'd wear wet socks or a t-shirt with a wet collar to his game. It would keep him cooler, I'd assured him. And recently I've heard there are real-life-crazy-people that actually play summer ball..... in BAKERSFIELD! eek! Anyway, I'm just glad we'll be spending our summer in a swimming pool and our AC'd house. It seems insane to even imagine doing all this again next Spring, but you can be assured that you will be able to catch us on a weeknight again with our baby's stroller loaded up with snacks, water bottles, baseball gear and a few folding chairs. AYSO sign ups are going on now for the Fall.. wondering what their schedule is like? Experienced parents post here! 4 comments from 4 users

you're scaring me! just signed ethan up for northwest league in fall. c'mon, don't you want to do the northwest league too?? i was laughing at the advantage of having to do the laundry twice a week. i too am seeing the gold at the end of the rainbow when the baby spits up. i get a LOT more laundry done and that's a GOOD thing. posted by

Northwest Baseball is good, too. The only uniform addition we had to make was the belt and cletes. Everything else was included (even socks!). We did have our own bat and balls, but that is not required. We just finished our last year of t-ball with them, so I'm sure next spring will reflect the same busy schedule you described Christina. I DID drive to a game this year while holding Layton's jersey out of the window so it would dry on the way! I will admit that it is easier on me than my wife. And there is a SAHD fact. I love sports and doing three times a week would be fun. Jill, not so much. Of course, I say that now. Ask me half way through the season next year. Layton is doing tennis camp this summer, which is every day for a week, BUT it is only a week. And because of the cost, it will be the only sports activity of the summer. So we might actually get some of that "do nothing" time. Definitely looking forward to that. posted by

Well, the kiddo isn't a sports kids, but we have already signed up for music & swim, and I'll be signing her up for art this week. But when June is over, we'll only have swim lessons. Down time is nice. posted by

As you all know we are in the brigade soccer league, thankfully only on Saturdays, but it makes for a long Saturday when you try to do all the shopping and errands after the soccer game. I have a feeling this will be our one and only sports league, we'll stick to archery and shooting sports up here on this distant mountain, I can do those in our front yard! I am enjoying the soccer league for Cole's sake, but I feel so rushed that I don't have time to really "enjoy" his games. We hurry to get to town, then hurry to find our field, then the game's over and it's rush here or rush there. And of course my family has showed up for the two games so far, but they all want to talk or make breakfast plans after the game or something else and I'm caught in the middle of it all - I love them but I hope they skip a few games!! We (mostly me) stay busy enough with 4H up here, sports in town just adds to the whole pot, summer is supposed to be my down time from 4H, but it never really stops, it just takes a short pause to breath deep then start all over again. And kindergarten starts August 5 for us - how do you parents with school age children handle all this pressure!!! (haha, please laugh with me not at me!)
