HeatherIjames - > I Have to Laugh or I'll Cry -> Marriage is Like a Slipcover
Marriage is Like a Slipcover

I saw a decent looking couch on the side of the road this morning, and I'm not saying that in a Jeff Foxworthy redneck type of way.  It was decent.  Red and white checked and without a noticeable stain.  I gave it a half thought to pick it up to replace the couch we have in the den.

The couch in the den is nice but the sun faded it too quickly and I have been forever struggling with slipcovers since.  This is when my mind started to make the comparison between marriage and slipcovers.  I always get suckered into buying a new slipcover because it showers me with the promise it will stay in place.  The picture shows a tidy enough couch that you'd almost think the slipcover is its natural upholstery.  So, I buy it.

Only to find out later that it doesn't matter what brand you buy, or how much you spent, the slipcover always slips.  And how do I make my couch look as nice as the picture?  Lots and lots of tucking.  Tighten here, tuck there, tie that.  Some good ol' fashioned getting your hands in it until you're up to your elbows, literally.  It looks pristine and perfect, but only for a moment.  Especially when children are involved.  They seem to dishevel the effort quicker than a squirrel scurrying for the side of a road.

And because a lot of frequent effort is involved, I often let the slipcover lie in a mess.  A tolerable mess, but a mess no less.  Mainly because that particular couch is in a room hardly anyone else sees but myself.  I figure if more guests came into that room, I'd probably put more effort in straightening the slipcover out.

My conclusion: I need a date with my husband.  A good tuck is in order.

I couldn't have said it better myself!  I often feel this way...and the date with your  husband (and a good tuck) will definitely make you feel better!  ;D  Although, the slip cover will remain a mess - I have resigned myself to the fact that nice furniture and children (boys who love to build houses out of pillows, run from one end of the livingroom to the other hopping from cushion to cushion....) are not a good idea.  Once the boys hit 3rd grade, then we'll infest in better furniture.  Until then, we'll just use the upholstery cleaner attachments on our steamer (a GREAT infestment) and try to teach them that furniture is not meant for jumping on, trampoline style flips, or any other kind of acrobatics!

Cute analogy.

Hi Heather!  I have slipcovers on my couch too! I did find a way to make them stay tucked longer than usual... yes, it stays put long enough you don't have to tuck everyday or every time the kids get on it.  All you need is a magazine and a rubberband (elastic bands).  You can also use those catalogs you get in the mail that you will probably never look at and just end up in the trash.  Roll the magazine or catalog so you form a tube.  Use the elastic band to keep it rolled.  When you tuck your slipcover into the crevices, tuck the fabric deep in the crevices with the tubes/rolled magazine tubes. This should keep them tucked tight.  Tuck as many "tubes" as you need to keep the slipcover from slipping.  Notice how they stay in place longer. I swear my slipcovers stay on longer then they use to!!! Check out this site... they have foam tubes that they recommend for use exactly the same way and for the same purpose!!! Mine is just a cheaper way of doing it!!!
