Grocery shopping by myself....a LUXURY!
I'm not sure if this falls under the "You know you're a mom when...." or just my selfish need for a little quiet time - however and whenever I can get it! I have been under the weather lately, and the heat just makes me cranky! So, I have stayed at home, in the cool and dark house with the a/c on 80, ceiling fans cranked, and doing only the absolute necessities in house work! So, when I realized the other night that we only had ONE nighttime diaper for the TWO boys (and they each needed one...) I took the opportunity to leave the boys playing at home with dad, who had been at work all day - but didn't seem to mind me splitting alone....ALONE! Whoa....you'd think I was on my way to the spa or some hot date with a friend in a far off place! I was gone for a short time, probably only about 45 minutes total. BUT, it was 45 minutes of TOTAL PEACE and QUIET! I didn't have to worry about: the boys running around the store, stepping on my toes or hiding behind the tall bin of outside balls that seem to find their way into the cart and in our yard, running the cart into my heals - or those of others who are not as understanding, kids wanting sugary treats that I have to pry from their hands....or worse, having to threaten them with a time out, losing a treat or a spanking for not listening. Yes, I suppose I lead a pretty boring life.....I have realized that if my highlight is actually being able to shop for nighttime diapers and milk by myself (with an extra trip to a discount store to buy recycling bins for the garage) as an added bonus! I need to get out more often! Although, we did take a trip out this morning, and it reminded me of why I REALLY treasure those times by myself! We made three stops....1. to a friends house to drop off a donation to their MOPS event next weekend 2. We had to stop two separate places to find the right size and color hat for Dad to wear at work and 3. The grocery store to get a few things for dinner the next few nights. In less than 2 hours, I had said, "Don't touch!" "Please listen to me and come here!" or something along those lines at least 40 million times!!! The guys in the stores we were in were pretty good natured - the first store, the owner tried to make me feel better by saying, "Well, they are boys!" REALLY? I guess he was trying to be funny.....I was ready to scream at the top of my lungs (which would have made me cough like a barking seal....pretty funny, I suppose!) "Why won't you boys just listen for goodness sake?!?" Oh yes, because you are boys and I need a vacation.....ALONE! :P

Woo hoo! I love going grocery shopping alone! I usually work my shopping trip around DH's days off, just so I can do it without my son running crazy through the store and touching everything, and to avoid having my daughter whining and screeching because she wants to hold/eat/play with everything I put in the cart. LOL I even love sneaking over to the Goodwill used bookstore for a few minutes on the way to the store to browse the shelves ALONE. I must lead a boring life too. *giggle* posted by

I suppose there is comfort in knowing we are not alone! LOL....most of my friends who have little one enjoy going shopping alone when they have the option. One dear friend even took a little extra time to grab a coffee from Strbucks, AND stop by the local salon to have her eyebrows waxed before going shopping! What exciting lives we moms lead ;).....sigh* posted by

You make me laugh. I think all SAHMs can relate. Yeah, grocery shopping by myself is a treat, too. You know how they have banks and dry cleaners in some grocery stores? They should put salons in there. Then we could have a one stop shop for pedicures and groceries! posted by

Hey, I have a fantastic idea for a grocery store, bank, coffee and juice place, full service salon AND.....child care too!! Talk about one stop shopping! Think of how relaxed we'd be shopping (and how much extra money we'd spend....) if we had someone fun to entertain the kids and keep them off our legs, out of the grocery cart and out of the food we were buying. Maybe we SAHM's should become mom-epeneurs and have the first one of it's kind? If only I had unlimited money.... posted by

You are HILARIOUS! My eyes began to water at the "shopping cart on the back of your heels" part. Then, I was laughing hysterically after I read the "barking seal" part. Wow! That sounds like what I go through. I dread grocery shopping, or shopping anywhere for that matter. When my daughter is with me in the store, or anywhere really, I have to say, "No. Stop. Keep your voice down. Put it back. Don't touch. Get your thumb out of your mouth. We don't need that. I'm telling your dad." She thinks everything is funny until I whisper in her ear that I'm going to call Dad right now. Then she begins to cry. It's funny how I have to go 12 rounds with her, but my husband only has to call her name, once, and she'll stop in her tracks. I'm the one who screams for sanity. My husband is the most quiet person I know, and all he says is one word and everything is taken care of. So, yes, I love shopping alone as well. posted by

Sometimes I really want to record my top ten "dont's" and then just replay them - over and over and over!! I have actually threatened to spank the kids when they misbehave so badly! UGH! Worse than shopping with the boys.....taking them BOTH with me to the doctor today to chat about my continued cough....three weeks after pneumonia and antibiotics, breathing treatments, plus the nice healthy shot of antibiotic from Urgent care! Even better....the boys got to sit and watch me be stuck to have a few vials of blood taken, plus a TB test....that hurt worse than the blood draw! THEN....they just HAD to follow me in to the restroom to watch me give a urine sample....they will surely choose the MOST unfortunate time to share this great bonding experience - UGH! I'm just hoping that I don't have Valley Fever, or some other nasty virus lurking in my lungs...hence, the barking seal remains! At least I can sort of yell now....until the tickle in my throat gets me coughing. I suppose we all laugh so hard at our shared experiences - because we can see ourselves doing this MANY times over....like shopping with my boys when I have PMS and they are tired, cranky and only want to sample every thing in sight at Costco!
