Lessons from Mom

I had the chance to visit with my mom this weekend as she and I met up in Tehachapi at my uncle's cabin. Now that I'm pregnant, I had lots of questions:

How much did I weigh when I was born? 7 pounds, something (I don't remember! I'll have to ask her again.)

How much did you gain when you were pregnant with me? 50 pounds (yikes!) and  lost it all right away

What was it like to give birth to me? I was a week late. To help get me out, my dad took my mom offroading. Apparently that didn't work either. My mom's water never broke. Maybe I was waiting for my mom's birthday so we could share the special day together. Sure enough, I was born the evening of my mom's 21st birthday. She opted for a natural birth; no epidural. She said it was more fun than painful and when I popped out, my mom said "That was fun! Let's do it again!" She likened the experience to a roller coaster ride.

During the course of the weekend, my mom was surprised by all the things I was abstaining from. No coffee? No caffeine? My mom said she drank Pepsi during her pregnancy. I told her the obvious ones: no nicotine, no alcohol. But then there were these: no raw eggs (no caeser dressing), no raw fish or undercooked meats (although I cheated and ate seared ahi and medium-rare steak from the barbecue), no non-pasteurized cheeses (although I ate some goat cheese and didn't ask whether it had been pasteurized or not. It was sooooo good). No yogurt or bubbly drinks (my gas is bad enough!). No bananas (I need fruits that makes things move, not the opposite).

My mom said she didn't remember any of those rules when she had us kids. She just went about her usual lifestyle. I haven't minded giving up too much, in fact I am so happy I was finally able to quit smoking after 10 years!

I hope my birth experience was as much fun as my mother's :)

Sounds like you had a great time.  And yes, your birthing experience will be fun!

Write all this down in your baby journal so your little one can read it and laugh when it's their turn to be a parent! I ate so much peanut butter with both pregnancies that my boys ask for it almost every day, I think it's in their blood.

Will your mom be around for the delivery of this baby?

I only hope, for your sake, that your mom's birthing experience runs in  your family.  I don't think I could ever liken giving birth to a rollar coaster ride.  maybe one of those carnival ones with rickety screws, rusting metal, and a broken safety belt, where you're holding on for dear life, thinking that you're not going to get through it in one piece.  but, there's always the exception to the rule!  but, seriously, i do hope you have your mom's experience!

can i just say, i hate rollercoasters. ha!  i labored with my second birth all the while knowing she was breech and i was going to have to have a c-section. but despite the horror stories you will hear over the next 9 months, it is worth every bit of it to hold that baby.

It sounds like you had a great weekend you had sharing with your mom - you should definitely write it all down and save it.  One thing I wish I had done more is take pictures of me in each stage of pregnancy, especially the end stages - what a belly you end up with!  I printed out and kept all of the emails I sent back and forth to my cousin who was also pregnant at the same time I was expecting.....what great memories those emails hold!  Also, I wrote letters to my unborn baby, all the pregnancy.  They are great to read now, and my sons love hearing each of their letters from mom.

Something I wish I had done more (not necessarily for my kids...well, maybe for their later years) was video tape and record my family - especially my grandma who passed away this past December.  My boys are so young, and I want them to remember her amazing gifts and talents.  So, if you have a chance, use a video camera to record every family get together....even yourself!

Enjoy the pregnancy - once they are here, you will be too busy smiling at them and wondering how your child can be the absolute most adorable!  ;0)

BTW, I gained 50 lbs. with pregnancy #1, less with #2 (but, only because I was too busy with my oldest!)....breastfeeding the first 9 months to 1 year helps to get the weight off....especially if you have a toddler to chase after!  ;)

i agree with heather... a roller coaster ride, really? What a great attitude! And good job asking questions... it helps to find out others' experience.

My mom said she was super careful with me ate all the right foods and stuff. By the time my three sisters came along she said she was exhausted and subsited on a diet of Pepsi, Hostess Ding-Dongs and grilled cheese sandwiches. I guess my sisters turned out OK. Hehe!

Oh and about the rollercoaster giving birth is fun thing... apparently there is this phenomenon called "Orgasmic Birth"... imagine that!
