kevinmorrison - > Slowing Down the Blur -> Start 'em Young
Start 'em Young

Some of you may remember that I previously blogged about going down to Mexico over Easter Break and helping to build houses.

Yesterday, I took my 5 year old for the day and it was an experience he can't wait to repeat.  I was so proud of him as he got right in there and worked along side the rest of us.  I didn't care that he was done after about half an hour.  He spent the rest of the day playing with Mexican kids.  He took some of his own hand-picked toys to give away.  And at the end of the day, he gave away candy and toys to several families.

He got it.  He understood that some people are miles less fortunate than us, and he can't wait to go back again.  And I look forward to taking him back.

Now I know there are comments that will be unspoken, like "Oh my gosh, you took your little boy to Mexico?  That is so dangerous!"

It's more dangerous outside my front door.  I was so comfortable in the location we worked in yesterday, that there was a time someone asked where Layton was, and I said "I don't know, he's around here somewhere," and went back to work.

It was a great experience, and Layton is well on his way to understanding the WHOLE world around him, and for that I am proud.

We'll be doing these one day trips a few times a year, spending the night at a church on a Friday night, working in Mexico Saturday and driving home to Bakersfield Saturday night.  I'll post the next time we do and we'd love to have you come!  It's a great day to spend as a family.

Wow, that is so awesome! That is something that more of us should be doing, is teaching our children how to give. How to give of our time, money, effort, heart and not expect anything in return. Job well done.

What a great idea!  A lesson like that is something you can't teach a kid out of a book.  Great job!!
