I guess I am a conspiracy theorist
I was looking up my textbook for my history class this fall and it is $105. That's $45 more than the class cost! AND the 13th edition is required, which just came out this year, all but eliminating the possibility of finding a decent priced, used copy. After a little research, I discovered that new editions come out every couple of years, sometimes even every year. I would be fine with this if it were for the course, "U.S. History from 1870-Present." But this is the volume for "U.S. History from Colonization to 1877." Is that history really changing every year?? I had the thought, "maybe I'm writing the wrong kind of books!!!" 3 comments from 3 users

Ugh. I hate textbook prices. I always did a lot of research into what books I chose for my students because I did NOT want them to spend that much on one book, but I still wanted a quality book. I wish they would make their "updates" less often--some of the "updates" are so small, it would be nice if they waited several years before putting out new editions. Some of the best places I shopped for used books as a student were Half.com and Amazon.com. posted by

A lot of the instructors I know are forced to choose these books because of a contractual obligation. It goes something like this: many instructors are contracted to have to use the campus bookstore, the campus bookstore is contracted to only request the newest edition from the publisher, ergo by extension the instructor is contracted to only use the newest editions. It is completely a racket.
