Seven years ago today, which happened to be the hottest day of that summer, Jill and I got married in Pasadena. I was recently reading a poem I wrote a month after we met, and it still applies today
Jill,
It wasn’t that long ago
When I first looked into your eyes.
I saw your heart
And I saw your soul.
There, I saw a beauty
Wearing no disguise.
My heart leapt up
When I heard you speak
Of a love for God,
And of a love for children,
Of the simple life
And...
Holly was awesome! She had a blast and her proud parents, grandparents and friends did too! We're so proud of you Holly!
And big kudos to Tom (the owner) at Stockdale Florist. I will never go anywhere else for flowers again! The price was awesome and he did a beautiful job. He even asked me her height when doing the design ("don't want to overwhelm her").
So I was at BC today taking the assessment test. My transcripts will probably make it irrelevant, but they are not here yet and I want to make sure I can get registered. I breezed through the reading and writing sections and then came to a screeching, crashing, begging-for-mercy halt when I came to the math. I did ok, but MAN, it was a lot harder than I expected an assessment test to be. I saw the very first question and whispered "You have got to be kidding...
Conference call a week from Monday with the publisher to discuss my 5th book! I'm not a fluke! WooHoo!
This one is about bullies and how to deal!
The car never left the driveway yesterday! WooHoo!!! And it's not because we didn't go anywhere. I'm going to start keeping track of how many days a week/month I can pull that off and check the difference in the gasoline bills.
Does anyone on RB take online classes through Bakersfield College? I think I'm going to do it, but wanted to hear from anyone who has gone or is going that route. At first glance, BC seems to have a pretty extensive online offering. I've attended five colleges and graduated from none. Just not a classroom personality. Don't need a degree, but there is some cool stuff out there to learn that could be worked into my writing. I don't need to learn how to...
Nothin to say today. Just wanted to show off my super-cool kids
Here's my dilemma, or at least the perceived one. Layton had a best friend in Pre-school, Paul. He's not in pre-school anymore, will never go to the same school as Paul, does not go to the same church as Paul, and unless I make an effort, he will never see Paul. BUT he still talks about him, and asks when he can go to his house. Paul's dad and I have made the occasional effort to get them together, but I think he must feel the same way. Layton and Paul have...
I've noticed a lot of mentions of church in several blogs. That's actually one of the things that was attractive about Bakersfield when we were looking at places to move to, was that there seemed to be a church on every corner.
I was wondering this morning what churches were represented here on RB. We are sort of splitting time right now. We are members at Christ's Church of the Valley, but we are working with the new church plant, Kaleo Fellowship which CCV is supporting....
Had a great Fathers' Day yesterday. I would post pictures, but I am the family photographer and I took a break from most duties yesterday. Layton gave me a tennis racket, which is cool because he just got one for his tennis camp and now we can play together. Miss Hollywood gave me a new Ted Dekker book. He's one of my favorite authors.
We spent the day at church and then at my parents' house, eating, watching Dale Jr. get his first win in two years, watching the...
Layton's bunkbed is finished! Sort of, maybe, almost, not really, but as close as it is going to get for now.
Layton loves it. I can see little flaws here and there, but Layton is the final judge and he is thrilled. So am I.
The only thing not in the pictures yet is his complete train set-up on the bottom bunk. We knew he was getting more train stuff for his birthday, so that addition will be made this week!
Layton turned six on Friday, with the celebration activities happening yesterday at Chuck. E. Cheese, followed by a dip in the little pool with his cousins. Quick note: Chuch E. Cheese is MUCH improved since our last visit. I actually recommend it now for the kids.
It seems like yesterday that we were at Kaiser in Bellflower two weeks earlier than planned and at 1:07 am on June 13th Layton made his entrance. I think about that tiny little bundle that I nicknamed...
So I ended up doing more yesterday after I thought I was calling it quits. Still a ways to go, but the guard rail is up and Layton actually slept up on top last night. The "loft" is up, but still needs its guard rail. Layton immediately climbed under the loft and said, "Dad, how did you know I wanted a hide-out?" The answer was easy. I was six once, too. Now, I'm off to the beach until friday, but then I will have to finish the bottom...
Here is what we have so far. The top bunk is done except for the guard rail. I'll put that on tonight and Layton can sleep in what we've made so far. That's it for today. I have an admitted short attention span. My inexperience has only brought about one mistake, and it was really insignificant and very fixable. I'm super pleased so far. I got up there and flopped my 192 lbs on there and it didn't budge. Didn't even creak. So I am...
I'm taking the plunge into father/son carpentry, building a really cool bunkbed/loft for my son for his 6th birthday. I don't build things. Never have. Not since my pinewood derby car in kindergarten (2nd place, thank you very much). My brother is a professional carpenter. So is my father-in-law. But for the purposes of bonding, Layton and I have designed the bed, bought the lumber and hardware, and we are ready to tackle the job all by our inexperienced...
I'll decrease my demand for the addictive drug known as gasoline and then maybe the price will drop a couple bucks for everyone else. Well, maybe not. I'm not that big an impact, but it will help my own bank account at least.
I'm going to see how many days a week my car can stay parked in the driveway. I'm going to get back into biking and I'm looking for a bike trailer to haul my daughter around in, to and from preschool. I'll go out and buy one (for less than...
As celebrations go, I look forward to Fathers' Day. I don't apply this to other people, but for myself, I think celebrations should be reserved for accomplishments. For instance, my birthday means nothing to me and in fact, I feel embarrassed if people get me stuff and want to celebrate me like I did something worthy of it. "Happy Birthday! Congratulations on living another year!" Doesn't fly. But Fathers' Day. I earned that title, not just...
I'm working the VBS at Christ's Church of the Valley this week, and my kids are also attending. I've noticed a wide array of expectations from parents as they are dropping off and picking up their kids. I haven't talked directly to them, but simply listening to their comments to their children is pretty telling.
Some are just using it as day care.
Some are wanting their children to get something out of it spiritually.
Some are expecting their children to get a complete...
I've been watching the politcal wheels of each party start to seriously spin (and do donuts in each other's lawns), and I got to thinking about what my own angle should be in analyzing the options for who SNL is going to make fun of for the next four years.
For me, for the first time ever, I'm asking "what is our country doing for (or to) my children?" I'm done worrying about what the country does for me. "Ask not what your country can do for you..."
...
OK, I'm back from my kidless weekend with the wife and two other couples. Raising Bakersfield may now continue! (like you even knew I was gone)
Great weekend. Hangin out at the pool, playin cards, eating, napping, walking, hot tubbing, eating, napping.... and NO WHINING! It was awesome.
Now back to life.
