The Role of Fatherhood
Father’s Day came and went, but with it my thoughts have been turning to the role of being a Father. I didn’t have a close relationship with my father and he passed away while I was in high school. The role expectations I have for fathers must therefore come from media and literature. This can be a bit of a frightening concept as when you actually think about father role models there is a lot left to be desired. Still, I came-up with what I think is a useful list of a few notable fathers and what I can gain from examining them.
If I extrapolate from the table above I think I end up with basically the following results for the kind of father I should be:
And, of course, here are some methods to avoid the pitfalls:
Please feel free to add any thoughts or characters you think would help me in evaluating the role of fatherhood.

Jack Bauer. Advantages/good attributes: Deeply passionate, loves his family, will sacrifice himself for those he loves, he gets to travel, carry guns, meet interesting people, and blow stuff up all on the government's dime. Disadvantages - His wife got killed, his daughter hates him, and he never gets much of a vacation. I guess that one's not really worth it... although who doesn't want to blow stuff up? John (from "John & Kate Plus 8") - Advantages/good attributes: Extremely patient, efficient and on top of the situation. Never a dull moment, lots of kids to love, and a whole bunch of stuff paid for by TLC. Disadvantages: 8 kids and he drives a Dodge Sprinter, no time for himself to recoup, somebody is always crying. Half the time, it would be me... posted by

Charles Ingalls ( "Pa") - loving, attentive to children and wife, hard working, creative, musical, problem solver, wise, - I could go on and on about him. Drawbacks - never owned a car, ???? can't really think of any Kevin- Jack Bauer meets a lot of interesting people, yes, but many of them can't be trusted! (When's that show coming back?) posted by

I'll look into it. I've heard there's going to be a "tv movie" event to catch us up on what's happened to Jack between the last season and the next one, and then the next one will start. Whenever it comes back, I'll guarantee that Jack will use the line "There's not enough time!" at least a dozen times. He needs a new A-list co-star to come in and phase him out though for the series to survive. I love Jack, but his days in CTU should be numbered, before the writers get bored with him and jump the shark. posted by

that clip! at first i was laughing, then i realized it might be wrong to be laughing!! :) my husband and i used to joke like that when we were expecting our second son. one night, i told him i had finally come up with a name for the baby. in reverse line of thought from the video and favoring the first child, i said (on account of our first son's name being ethan) that we would name the second one, Not Ethan. and when we introduced our boys, we'd say, "these are our sons, Ethan and Not Ethan."
