May Day

A text from my mom reminded me this morning that it is May Day. She said "Happy May Day, kiss your sweetie." I'm not sure why, but we celebrated May Day... and many other random holidays. My parents love celebrating holidays. Now that we're adults, they'll often send cards or candy on these (not-so-important) holidays like May Day.

When we were kids, we would make baskets of candy for our friends and neighbors. Usually we would drop the baskets at their front door & run away. If we got caught, they would have to kiss us. Looking back- what a strange tradition.

Did you do anything to celebrate May Day? How so?

I'll be honest and say I had to look up what May Day is even for.  To my surprise, it is not a holiday created by Hallmark!  I don't think my family ever ventured to far from the big holidays, or if they did, it wasn't very memorable.

My dad's a big gift and card giver, so growing up, my mom and I'd get stuff for everything--St. Patrick's Day, Japanese Boy's and Girl's Days (I'm half Japanese), and of course my not-too-fond memory of opening my April Fool's Day gift as a kid to find my mom's gift, a nightgown (my dad thought that was hilarious).  No May Day celebrations, though.

Nope! No May Day celebrations here either, I'm going to have to follow Kevin's lead and figure out what it means anyway!

ha ha! I thought in the very least you'd all know what it was... or do I even know what it is??? :) I guess it was just another reason for fun.

No May Day celebration here.  But I do remember the Maypole dance/celebration when I was in elementary school.

I treated myself to the new Jackie Chan/Jet Li movie.  I think from now on, thats what my tradition will be.

I remember celebrating May Day in Preschool at First Pres. (downtown Bakersfield)  It was a great time of dressing up, sort of like an Easter celebration with a maypole dance (I think they had paper streamers that we wrapped around a tall pole).  Lots of fun, but I can't say we have continued the tradition....May 1st, I believe is May day...right?  Any day is a good day for fun!  Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
