Story Time
Today my two kiddoes and I took a trip to Borders for their "Little Book-A-Roo" storytime. We learned about it from the RaisingBakersfield.com flyer I got in the mail recently (which also was what brought me to this site). It was a really well-designed storytime! We got there about 5 minutes early, and found a seat on the carpet in the kids book section. The storytime began with a song, and then all the kids were given a nice snack of goldfish crackers and juice. This was a great idea, because at least for the first story all of the kids were fairly quiet as they chowed down and listened to the story. The lovely storyteller read us three books: Never Take a Shark to the Dentist, Leo the Late Bloomer, and Puppies for Sale. The books were so cute, but by the end of the reading time all of the kids were getting wiggly and not-so-quiet anymore. Then they all got to have some crayons and coloring book pages to color with. It was a nice time out of the house, and a great way to hear some new books. My son was mainly interested in looking at all of the other books there, but it was a good experience for him to try to sit quietly while the storyteller was reading. Hopefully we can make that excursion more often. Sometimes it feels like we never leave the house, but then when we do leave the house I remember why we don't go very often. It's a major production to get everything together and ready and into the car. But, I think this trip was worth the stress. :) I love the bookstore, so it was also a struggle to not buy a bunch of books... 8 comments from 7 users

I'm so glad you learned about the storytime from our newsletter! (FYI, the monthly print newsletter, which will reprint user-generated content from the previous month's website activity, including journal posts and photos and, of course, upcoming calendar events, was mailed to some households in town as part of our pre-launch marketing push, but most months, you'll be able to find it at stores and businesses across town.) Sharing that kind of information, parent-to-parent, in one place, was a major reason we wanted to do this site. When my wife went back to work and I was at home with our daughter, I remember looking all over, especially online, for information about things to do around here--so I'm happy we've been of use to you! We looooove bookstores. We're in at least one bookstore at least once a week. I imagine, when we finally do have another child, that it'll be harder to get out of the house, but right now, with just the one, well, bookstores are cheap entertainment. (If I can keep myself from buying anything!) We started taking The Pumpkin to bookstores very early on, and to storytimes too. Now she asks to go to the bookstore for fun. posted by

You made my day! :) I am so happy you ... #1 received our newsletter I totally know what you mean about the struggle not to buy books. I always spend at least $25 everytime I go to a bookstore even if I am just popping in to get a coffee at their cafe! posted by

I really loved the calendar part of the flyer--it is AWESOME to have a list of all of those kid-oriented activities available in one spot. It is currently living on my refrigerator. :) My son was in awe--he loves bookstores (and libraries) too. So many books of things he loves. As soon as we walked in the door he exclaimed, "We're at the library!" LOL He's definitely a book-lover already. I wish we would go more often, but it gets hard chasing two around the store and trying to keep them from picking up and dropping books all over the floor. They don't seem to get that while I don't mind them doing that at home, it's not such a great thing at the bookstore or library! posted by

Don't forget that the printed calendar (and indeed the whole newsletter) is only a hint of what's on the website, constantly updated by both staff and by you, the community members. On the righthand sidebar of the homepage and section pages, you'll see an event calendar box with five of today's events in it, and a link to the full chronological (which also have subcategories you can sort by). We're always looking for new events to list online, and you, too, can submit events you know about (just do like you're gonna do a journal post but click "event" instead).

We love storytime, too! We haven't been on Tuesdays for awhile b/c the kiddo started preschool, but we plan to hit it this summer (between 9:30 music lesson and 11:30 swim lesson). We'll meet you there! posted by

I love love love storytimes. There are several in town. However, the Little Book-A-Roo is one of my very favorite. They hand out it's fun and they give kid snacks . Bonus was once when they also handed our drinks from the Cafe for the moms. I thought, I can so live here! We'll meet you there one day I'm sure. Bakersfield is a VERY small town! :) posted by
