Why My Daughter Will Stay Rear-Facing
My daughter is still rear-facing at 17 months. She is petite, not quite 20 pounds yet, but she will continue to ride in the carseat rear-facing until she reaches the maximum height or weight limit for rear-facing in her seat. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that it is best for a child to sit rear-facing for as long as possible. This video explains why. (P.S. It's not gruesome or scary--just gives some good information). 3 comments from 3 users

Wow - this was awesome!! Thanks for the link and great information! I also wanted to share the the CHP office will check any carseat for proper installation - all you have to do is stop by during their normal office hours and they will check it for you. Also, there are car seat installation checks at the Babies R Us get togethers (I can't recall exactly what they are called), but they have a group of trained professionals that will weigh your kids, check their seats, and then re-install them for you to show you what can be done to make them safer. When I worked for DHS (Dept. of Human Services) I was trained in how to properly install car seats....I became pretty good at it! Now, I am fanatical about the car seat installation and will even sit in the seat (yes, all of my weight) as I make sure it is tightly restrained before they get into the car. My 6 year old is tall, and about 55 lbs. - but, I still insist that he use his seat to support him and keep his seatbelt where it belongs - besides, he is only 55 lbs. and I am the mom!! I nearly came unglued one day when I saw a mother of two kids - ages 1 year and 4 (I think...about that age, anyway) just put her kids in the front seat of their truck, use a lap belt (YES! A LAP BELT!) on her 1 year old, let her 4 year old strap the seatbelt - and then pull the shoulder harness over his head to only leave him with the lap belt. Even if we drive around the corner to home from the mailbox (after returning home from errands, school, etc.) the kids are strapped in and not allowed to unbuckle unless the car is stopped and turned off! I will be sending this link on to all of my preschool mom-friends and maybe a few others. THANKS!!

Oh my, I would have been shocked to see someone put small children in a car with no carseats too! Kudos to you for making sure your kids are safe in the car, and thanks for the info on getting car seats installed properly! With all of the bad things that can happen in this world, at least we can make sure our kids are riding safely in our vehicles. :) posted by

Heck, I wish I could sit in a rear-facing car seat. If it is that much safer I wonder why they don't make cars with the passenger seats facing the other way. Maybe it has something to do with motion sickness. I don't know. I haven't ridden in public transportation in a while, but I don't recall ever seeing anyone with their kid in a car seat strapped in place on a bus. Makes me wonder about that.
