A close family friend moved away today--across the world to Missourri--and she's not the first friend I've lost to that state. But anyway. She is in her 70's and one of the coolest ladies I know. Eccentric in all the right  ways and someone I aspire to be like should I hang around the planet long enough.  She collects unusual earrings and has hundreds of pairs...her late husband used to buy them for her...and great hats that she would sport on Sunday mornings at church. She was...

Sometimes I worry about what my girls have. And I mean what they have, not what they don't have. Even with a single, mostly-unemployed Mom, scraping by on child support and little else, they have an excess. Between their respective Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even me, they are spoiled. I recently went through the toys in their room. Toys they don't even see because there are too many. And we will be making a trip soon to donate some to charity, just so they can glimpse what...

When I was growing up my family went to Oklahoma about every other summer because my dad had family back there...but when you live in 100 degree heat already, going somewhere with 100 degree heat plus 50% humidity ain't exactly a vacation! And it wreaked havoc on my 80's feathered perm. LOL! But in hindsight the road trips were fun--there were definitely memorable parts about them. Camping, staying in hotels and stops along the way, like the Grand Canyon, Flintstone Village and Carlsbad...

I don't know about y'all but I am counting the days until school's out. After 2 years of home schooling, public school has kicked my butt! It's been a great experience over all, but the getting up and out the door every morning with two kids for the past 9 months? Forget it! Not to mention the homework. My 8 year old is capable of doing most of her work without too much input from me, but I still have to make sure it gets done and correct it when it is. And let me tell you, some afternoons...

It's funny how life shapes you in ways you never expected. I was never one of those girls who, growing up, knew for sure that they wanted to have kids. But eight years ago I became a mother and it changed my life forever,  for the better. My first daughter entered my world 4 weeks early and just 8 days shy of Mother's Day.  And after spending 2 days in the hospital where she was born, she had to be moved across town to another hospital. The very thought of this infuriated me when...

My Mom is the epitome of nurturing. Not only did she nurture her own children, she was a wonderful step Mom to two and foster Mom to over 25 children. To me that is remarkable. To love not only the children that came from you, but also those who came to you. She has an incredible strength and love and compassion that reaches to all the 'children' who have known her. Even now, in my late 30's, my Mom nurtures me—with her wisdom and advice. Her acceptance and her encouragement of...

Eight years ago today my life changed forever, for the better. My sweet Sequoia was born, 4 weeks early and feet first. She has been a light in my life ever since. She is beautiful inside and out. A singer and dancer. An artist and animal lover. Compassionate, kind and a wonderful friend. I can't believe eight years have passed already. It has been a joy to watch her grow and will continue to be.  She is a blessing in my life and the lives of all who know her. Happy Birthday Baby! ...
