In the last six weeks, I've gotten my cholesterol down from 305 to 170, and my triglycerides down from 900 to 140.
I didn't know it was possible to do it that quickly!
now we'll get them down even farther!

May 17, 2008 at 11:05 PM : OK, here's what...

OK, here's what happened. I was in the doctor's office for an updated physical for our adoption paperwork. On my last physical (over a year earlier) it was pointed out to me that my cholesterol and triglycerides were at levels of concern. My doctor prescribed Lopid to help reduce the levels along with excercise and better diet. BUT the Lopid kept me awake. I literally did not sleep for 3 and half days. I decided I would rather kick the bucket in 10-15 years because of my cholesterol, than next thursday because of lack of sleep. So I dumped the Lopid and tried to eat/excersise better. But this last physical, my numbers went UP, well beyond "concern." Since my prior physical, my dad had quadruple bypass surgery and the primary noted culprit was his cholesterol. So this all amounted to a nice slap in the face.

The doctor prescribed Zocor this time, which I've now been on for two months, and I haven't noticed one single side effect. In addition, I've pretty much cut out red meat and cheese, and I read every single label, avoiding anything with greater than 0% cholesterol. I do cheat. I'm not perfect. So the silver lining is knowing that I can have those things every once in a while. I've also been excersising more, nothing serious, no gym memberships or anything. Just messin around in my house... crunches, small weights, push ups, and a few laps around the neighborhood a couple times a week.

It really was a much easier lifestyle change than I originally anticipated. Maybe it took the slap in the face, but I don't even crave red meat anymore. I'll eat it if it is served to me, but I don't order it.

Anyway, I don't know how much help that was and I don't know what percentage of my reduction was due to the Zocor, but it might be worth checking out!
