Family of Six : "Precious Moments"

I too have four children (four boys - 9, 6, 4, 1) and I wonder myself how I survive the everyday little things that absolutely drive me crazy. If my boys do something major I seem to handle it much better than if they stuff the toilet with toilet paper and then proceed to flush it over and over until my entire bathroom is flooded along with their business.

As your son, my 9 year lets me know on occasion that he really appreciates me and all of the things that I do for him and his brothers and even his dad. It is times like these when you definitely think "OK, it is all worth it (well most of it (Ha Ha)!".

One day when he came home from school, I was so excited to tell him that I had washed all of his and his brother's bedsheets and that when he went to bed that night that his bed was going to feel so good (there is nothing better than a newly changed bed). Well, he looked at me with this very serious look on his face and said, "Mom, no one really cares if the sheets are clean or not, but if it is a big deal to you than Thank You.". I guess you can't ask for any more than that.

I like your Blog, it lets me know that I am not alone in this crazy world - Karen

The swelling of most of your body parts is the hardest thing to handle while being pregnant....especialy the "cankles" and feet! My belly got so big with both pregnancies that I could only wear slip on shoes after month 7.....seriously! I was so anxious to see my feet (other than in a mirror - which was not that great a view anyway...) and be able to tie my shoes again! I really had high hopes that I could come home from the hospital in "regualr" clothes....yeah right! Maybe 6 month maternity clothes; but, definitely not regular clothes!

I have to agree with the other moms, enjoy the squirmy, kicking and rolling feelings of your sweet baby boy while he is in your tummy! Soon, you will be on your way to the first doctor's check up after birth and that will make you cry more than your little one! I still cry when I have to subject either one of my boys to a poke from the lab, immunizations or Lord help you if you ever have to deal with pre-op procedures for surgery for your little guy! (I'll not mention the 'other' little guy procedure you will have to face making the decision on once he is born and a week old.....)

I loved the pictures of your trip! Thanks for sharing! I really loved the mural....and the ocean! Oh yes, and if you can camp and travel together without killing each other....you can definitely raise a child together! Just remember, you are individuals...and there will be days that you wonder, what in the heck? Communicate, communicate, communicate! :0) And, remember that James has loved you through thin and cankles.....telling you that you are beautiful no matter what you feel....gotta love him for that! Happy family car shopping!

If you are worried about blogs being taken think about your pic's of you and your kids being stolen! Anyone can copy the pics you put on line claim it as there own, or put it up on another web site claiming to be u. then they can take the pics of your kids and say that's their kids, or some pervert out there can like your kids copy the pic and look at it anytime they want on their computer. That is why I am very cautious about what pics I put up on line, I wont put pics with our faces showing, just back shots or far away shots wear you can't make out our faces. This happened to my best friend. She has a myspace profile, and has a bunch of pics of her 2 kids and herself/hubby. She is a very beautiful girl, and she found her pics on tagged, another web site like myspace. With a man claiming that her kids and her pics were his girlfriend and his kids. SCARY THOUGHT!!! that gives you something to think about.

When my daughter was about 4 she always wore my bra's around the house she would stuff them with socks, saying "look Mommy I have boobs like you" Now she's almost 9 and about 2 years ago she started asking me when she will get big boobs. Now she is wanting to wear little bras/sports bras (not padded of coarse) but she still tells me she can't wait until she has big ones. I don't like this part of them growing up.

So get ready for more from your little one

My cankle thing got so bad... that my feet were like part of the whole scary process. At my baby shower, I wore these huge slippers because none of my shoes fit. I tried my slippers on a couple weeks after Sam was born and they fell right off my feet.

Your swollen-ness will go away. Hooray for that!

Girl oh girl I can't help but laugh at your cankles comment. I had non-stop cankles from about month #4 on. I was so worried about it because all my girls at work told me that I must be eating too much salt, not resting enough, bla bla bla. Finally my doctor said that sometimes they come and stay and not to worry as they'll go away when the baby is born. What the heck?!?!? Another 5+ months of tree trunk legs when I'm already huge enough as it is... no way. Alas, they stayed only to disappear approx 2 wks after my son was born. So don't worry, it won't last forever. Just another body part to get bent outta shape in preparation for motherhood.

I miss those nights of laying on the sofa watching my belly roll. My son never kicked, he rolled, and it was the most amazing feeling ever. I miss being pregnant. I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did and now I miss everything about it so enjoy yourself and take LOTS of pictures, you'll be glad you did when it's over.

We had our first year of middle school last year with my son. He too had a hard time at frst, a new school and no friends. He quickly adjusted to the routine and made some very good friends. Give her some time, she will adjust. Keep in mind she is a TWEEN..... she is very hormonal and sometimes, although we dont like to hear this.... we have to let our kids be themselves, figure things out. You cannot do this for her. Encourage her to talk on her terms, but she is going to need to find HER space.

My seven-year-old son has been concerned about "getting fat" and has asked me, "Mommy, can you lose some pounds?" (Why yes, I need to lose some pounds, dear boy, but you are truly a-ok!)

Unfortunately, the lack of education in our society leaves most to believe they are just " BAD " kids. My personal favorite is those who do not have special needs children that claim " Parents are just using all the medical and drug excuses for their out of control kids and bad parenting skills" I tell them as I hear that, you think you can do better,,,, feel free. Take a stroll in my shoes for a bit and see how well you CURE my "BAD" kid. I applaud you for being the voice.

People "on the outside" think "What a gift it is to have a special needs child!" and we both wanted to throw up. None of us say "Wow, I hope my child has.... (name your problem)".... I never knew grief as intimately as I do now. And Sam is doing great. Absolutely great.

When I graduated from High School, I recalled not really thinking much about my sentence structure or forming an essay...I was good enough to get into the honors program in English, so I thought I must write decent....I went to BC and took the assessment test, thinking - I will be in the top English class. WRONG! I wasn't ready for that yet. I took the intermediate class and learned SO much! At the end, I learned how to form basic sentences. Create your main points and then build your essay from there. However, since the advent of texting, computer lingo, and the like....afraid that most of the younger generation is not up to writing essays, or forming coherent sentences that fit the topic. It seems as though the teachers today are so pressured by test scores and making the grade with that to keep their school funded, that they don't have the time to really teach.

I am taking a class at BC (I graduated with my BA almost 24 years ago... I needed some stimulation and a 'place to be' so there I am, in Wowen in American History.) I am amazed at how much work we have to do, a paper a week, a research paper EVERYTHING is writing based. I am a writer by trade so not intimidated EXCEPT unlike when I went to college, I won't be able to fake the reading! LOL.

Perhaps the caliber of students in the online courses are different? I don't know what to tell you except after my first class session I was blown away by all the expectations the teacher had of all of us (ME!) and how I would fit this one class into my busy schedule. I looked around at the young single moms in the room and wondered how they do it?!

We switched to Good Nites - like the pullups, but for bigger kids. Target, Winco, WalMart all have them...I wish Costco had them! I buy a package of 28 for each boy and they go through one "big boy pull up" a night. Not too bad, considering it gives us all a good nights rest and less laundry. I think they are about $15 for 28 at Target. They have sizes s/m for up to 65 pounds. m/l are for up to 100 or so pounds, maybe more (not quite there yet!).

I hope this helps your quandry for big-girl pull ups! Also, I am giving rewards if the boys wake up dry and have their big boy pull up off before they have to pee....no takers yet, but, the youngest has come close a few times! The oldest just sleeps too solid to wake up before he wets his.

I agree with you Kevin. I think the problem gets worse each year. When I went to college, I thought it was bad, but the problem continues to grow. I think a lot of it starts early. We see so many children enter school behind and they never catch up. I also see many adults using very poor grammar. How are they ever supposed to help their children if they do not even know the correct rules? Teachers are pressured to teach to the test and I think writing is often pushed out to make room for more drills. I haven't been in a local high school recently, but I'm sure the classes are overcrowded and long writing compositions probably aren't assigned very often because the grading would be too difficult.

Exactly what I thought and what I was about to say, Nathan!!! I also noticed that in my online classes... and I feel bad for these kids!!! I didn't go to school here at all... all my schooling was done in the Philippines so I don't know what kind of writing and composition students do at school here. Just to share what kind of English writing work we do at our schools, we have to do a lot of writing in our English classes... theme compositions, position papers, essays, short stories, book reports, reaction papers, etc... If I remember it right, we wrote compositions in class everyday!!! And then we have the big papers due every quarter and a final paper due towards the end of the schoolyear which is usually a book report. My DD's Kindergarten teacher told me to always let my DD practice her reading and writing... and I agree with her... maybe our kids these days are not getting a lot of writing practice??? Papers they write at home does not help a lot esp. if they can just copy and paste their work from the internet... they need write their compositions in class so teachers and parents could see what kind of writing they are capable of doing and see if they need help.

I wish I could remember what my writing was like back during my senior year or early college. I have a couple papers I wrote, but for the most part I was extremely talented at throwing things away. Makes me wish I'd kept a few things.

I also wonder what effect the internet and texting is having. I think something like a blog where you write within the conventions of the English language can be beneficial, but if all you do is post on Myspace and text message C U L8R D00D it's not going to help.

I've probably learned that lesson over and over, but forget it periodically until something like this happens and it makes one feel dumb, irritated, violated, and down right ticked off, and even embarrassed.

Now, the funny thing is my f-i-l said something to me about a website with my name on it yesterday, in regards to my notary stuff, and I just sort of blew it off b/c I didn't remember making any websites for my notary. Then this morning I googled my name and came up with tons of stuff - talk about feeling violated. But I did find the website he was talking about and yes I had forgot about it b/c it's a site inside a site type thing. I guess basically if there is something you want to say about a family member, company, etc., write it down at home and then burn the paper so no one can respond to it!

I agree, but unfortunately it comes with the territory. Once something is posted here, it becomes visible to pretty much the whole world. Even if people don't copy and paste it, they can direct others to it. And even within the membership of this very site, there might be people that, if you had a choice, you wouldn't want reading what you write. I've learned the lesson the hard way (multiple times, unfortunately). If there is something you don't want even one other person to read or see, you can put it here or in any other viewable-by-the-public place. One of the dangers I have learned of the internet is that because when we are on it, we are doing so in our pajamas in our kitchen, office, bedroom, wherever... and we have a false sense of privacy and and not enough feeling of vulnerability.

I obviously don't know what was copied or what played out in your case, which may put me completely out of line. But I do know that I have learned a lesson that sounds similar to what you may have experienced.

it all goes back to the parenting... and we're several generations into the downward cycle now, because the poor parents of today had poor parents yesterday. Somehow the cycle needs to be broken through parent education. But there has to be some sort of incentive (apparetly raising healthy and intelligent kids is not incentive enough). I'm not sure how to do that yet

She only has one volume setting. Normally if she starts singing (yelling loudly) in public places, I tell her to stop or try to sing quietly, which she can't do.

But how do I tell her to stop singing that one?? Can't do it. So I just let people stare... and listen. :-)

I feel your pain! My oldest just started first grade and was okay with us walking him to his class, meeting the teacher...did not want to pose as cute as your sweetie. I had to zoom in and try to catch the best shots - or rely on the husband to do his best. I spent most of yesterday morning and early afternoon cleaning and keeping my mind occupied so that I didn't have to worry so much about "is he struggling in the new class?" What is the teacher really like? Since last year we had the Kindergarten orientation, I knew what to expect.....this year, NOTHIN! I am hoping to volunteer in the classroom again, and sent a note to the teacher this morning to see when the volunteer sheets will be sent home....I am just trying hard to let go a little more! I mean really, I did let him ride the bus home at least!! This morning, I did the car pool thing with his best friend. They were so excited, and they did make it clear - we are big boys now. We don't need you to walk us to class. We can walk in by ourselves! So, I gave my baby bird a hug and a kiss...at least a little hug and a peck on the cheek from mom.

I was just so proud of myself for not crying on the first day of class! ;) Much better than last year when I sobbed in the car and had to get a grip before even starting the car up! I guess next year will be the real challenge....my youngest begins Kindergarten...then what?

I couldn't agree with you more! If you want simple, go to Smart and Final for plates, napkins, etc. However, decorations are the issue for most locations. Depending on your ideas and time, you can do picture boards, poster size blow ups of your parents and their early years, maybe kids and grandkids and their major milestones and accomplishments....that type of thing. I helped to plan my aunt and uncle's 50th a few years ago and it was nice to have a picture of their wedding party framed on a mat that all of their guests had signed at the gathering. As a reminder of the event, I also did a really nice album of pictures that I had copied from my grandma's phots...and then included their 50th anniversary photos as well. With some time, I had it done in about 4 months - just in time for a Christmas present! (I had ink pens that were photo safe and acid free to ensure they would be around for years to come). My aunt loved it!

If you need help blowing up an old photo that is in poor condition, go to Henley's downtown. Most of all.....Enjoy it and don't worry about the decorations so much. Your parents will appreciate the effort you have put forth...no matter what type of decorations you use.

My mom was a smoker all my life. She would smoke in the car, the store, the house, etc. I grew up HATING cigarettes, smoking, smokers, etc. Luckily for me I'm the exception to the rule. I didn't run out and start smoking because mom did it. It was because mom did it that I didn't. I smelled the ashtray breath, the yellow fingers, the smokers cough and later in life I dealt with her COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) the oxygen tank she carried with her everywhere she went when she was well enough to go places, and ultimately her death. Smoking is an UGLY habit and if you don't love your kids enough in life to stop, imagine how horrible it is for them when you're gone.

My mom was an amazing woman, it's just too bad that she let smoking take her life. She was only 69, way too young to die, especially when the 8 years leading up to her death were filled with oxygen tanks, dr visits, nebulizer treatments...

Think about it.

but then where do you draw the line? Drivers should get tickets for not driving at 10 and 2. I agree that people get engrossed in conversation on the cell phone. but what about conversation with passengers IN the car? what about drinking coffee or other drinks? checking maps? changing the radio station? doing makeup? eating fast food? singing along with music? daydreaming?

That's why the cell phone law is silly to me, not because it doesn't serve a purpose, but because it's like trying to change the course of a river with a sponge.

Yes, that's for sure...like in the womb? Mothers who smoke while pregnant and then continue to smoke as their infants get bigger....or, fathers who don't get the fact that their family should not be subjected to second hand smoke just because they choose to smoke!

As far as the cell phone issue, I see that as a safety issue as well. Think about how many idiot drivers you have been nearly hit by because they are too engrossed in their phone conversation to pay attention to driving, the speed limits, the lights changing from yellow to red.....lane changes and me and my kids right next to them? Just Saturday, we were going to my grandma's house to pick up a few things and this mini van was driving like they were drunk. The GUY driving with his kids in the car (getting on the 99 FWY at 40 MPH with big rigs barreling down on top of him at 55+ MPH) was talking on his cell phone - and he never did speed up! DUH!! I guess when he is hit by a big rig and his family is wiped out, he will have learned his lesson, or maybe when he runs another family off the road and into a cement barrier....?

As far as Obama.....PLEASE, spare me! He is an....idiot!

I can go both ways on the government telling us what to do bit. As parents, we slap the hands of our kids when they reach for the electrical outlet or into the knife drawer. It's a safety lesson, necessary because nobody has taught them yet. We have a lot of parents who need safety lessons. So by all means, ticket the woman smoking with kids in the car. The cell phone issue is a joke and entirely different. But for safety, especially safety of those dependant on adults... the government should get in there. And you can get the ticket off your record if you go to parent school... like traffic school.

Obama... ya... not gonna do it.

Obama is going to inspire people though. Everyone will quit smoking and start volunteering to pick up trash on the beach. It's going to be a new nirvana.

And totally unrelated to your post...you see that Obama supports Roe v Wade because he knows women don't decide to have abortions "lightly." No crap Obama, but they sure decided to get pregnant lightly. What kind of rationale is that? "Women should be able to abort their babies, because you know, that's a really hard decision." Idiot.

One thing I learned with my boys, keep something in the car if you are out running errands, long drives (across town in traffic) that you can pull over and use as a urinal.....my oldest has a bladder the size of a pea and I have found that the glad ware containers are good for this....label it with a sharpie and keep it in a ziploc bag in the car. That way, you don't have to worry about getting him out of the car safely and finding a bathroom (or trying to help him on the side of the freeway)!

No arguement here! Smoking with kids in the car is truly irresponsible parenting!! Not that I think we need the government telling us what to do and not do....but, wasn't there a law passed recently that made it against the law to smoke in the car with children under a certain age? Just like the cell phone law that was supposed to stop people from talking on their phones without hands free or ear bud devices....you need the enforcers to stop these idiots! I guess we as citizens are expected to do what???

I too come from a boy family, but we only have 2, a 12 year old going on 20 and a 19 month old. I just dont think it gets much better than having boys. I agree with you fully, I'd would nver change my boys for girls.

I also agree with davooley's ideas....I think it would go along with the "more you know" programs that are still airing on NBC. Except with kids being the spokes person. I love it! Unfortunately, most people don't want to admit that they are not good parents, even when they allow their children to be physically or sexually abused by their significant others, neglected due to drug abuse, or just mentally and verbally abused. Even when under the influence, parents continue to insist they can care for their children just fine. HUH? I definitely think there has been a serious decline in the parenting responsibilities and quality of parenting since I was a wee one....in the early 70's....and way before I am sure. The issue is most of the offending parents don't consider parenting as a job. They think nothing of letting their 5 or 6 year old watch prime time garbage that is meant for adults only, or to use foul language in front of their kids.....then they wonder why the kids repeat and mimick what they have seen and heard....or they just don't see anything wrong with it. There will always be opposition to changing the social norms; however, I think we can make a fairly good argument that it is time to change the norms and improve society beginning at home! I'm behind the program, how can we get it started??

I suppose it could have been worse....you could have been at home after the chaos of your day and had the doorbell ring, answer it and have a group of very young, high school girls (most likely cheerleaders) out on a scavenger hunt ask if they could take a picture of your shoes - "no, the jeans - oh, wait! You are a mom, aren't you?! Can we take your picture for our scavenger hunt? You are perfect!" They flash my picture, say thanks and giggle as they move on to the next house. Well, I suppose we all have our moments....I thought I looked pretty cool in my capris (NOT "mom pants" as I thought I had bought the much cooler low-rise kind....apparently NOT!) my cute flip-flops, stylish new glasses, and my hair was cut and styled the day before, still looking pretty good (so I thought).

Obviously, the clerk and the cheerleaders were of the same thought....remember when we were younger (in high school) and anyone over 22 was ancient?!? I was chatting with my husband after I had a moment to process it....do I really look that old? I thought I looked pretty good for my age....not too many wrinkles, sure, I have a few extra pounds to shed, but, come on! Then he reminded me of our high school days, when I was the young cheerleader going around with my friends on scavenger hunts, looking for the "perfect" whatever we had to find.....I wonder who I insulted? Surely, it wasn't some really tired mom who had just finished getting the first in his jammies, the second was being difficult so, she just threw up her hands and walked out to answer the door.....to be insulted by skinny, dressed in way too revealing clothes, giggling, cheerleaders....The kids have no clue how old you are!

Well, from one tired mom to another, Happy Birthday!! And you look GREAT...not a day over 30! :0)
