I literally laughed out loud at the comment about the Non Californians and everyone else moving forward! I even had to read it to my husband and he cracked up too :)

So glad you guys were able to have a good (even better?) time despite the earthquake. And thanks so much for sharing the pictures!

That sounds like you had so much fun! We're planning to make a trip to the park this fall, after school starts back up and lines are hopefully shorter. I laughed at your description of non-Californians--that was a nice outcome to have the lines shrink for the rest of the day!

I just googled the book title I referred to in my earlier post....the book I sent to my brother and sister in law was I'll hold you in Heaven - Rememberance book by Debbie Heydrick. It was written by someone who experienced a miscarriage, and is a great tool to help you understand your feelings, giving you a place to journal and giving you hope at the same time. I hope it helps! Also, I have just ordered a book called "Someone I love died" by Christine Tangvald. (to help me with answering some of the questions my 6 year old has). I have been cleaning out the hall cabinets and found the birth announcement my brother and SIL gave us at Christmas to announce their bundle....it was tears all over for me! This week has been really hard since we went through my grandma's jewelry on Sunday....lots of memories! The reviews for this book were great - I'll let you know when it arrives.

What great pictures and greater memories for you all! The big shirts (until the end) and the feminine styles were my favorite.....I loved the low waisted maternity pants....more than the huge waist bands! I think the greatest part was not having to constantly hold my tummy in once I started to show....it was a great reson to let it all relax and not worry about a little round tummy. (although it's after the kids birth that you start to think about the remaining tummy and how do you get back in shape?) I SO loved being pregnant! The feeling of that first kick, the ultrasounds, watching the "belly shows" with family while I sat still....trying to guess which part of the baby was hitting me, talking to my tummy and waiting to meet our new baby...such good times! Enjoy the pampering and never turn away the help.....especially once your little guy arrives! That is so great that your mom's hit it off!

MMMMM that yummy chocolate creation makes my mouth water too! If you want to have another desert experience, try the Elephant Bar and Grill - they have this similar desert with the brownie, ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup......or, the huge chocolate chip cookie sundae thing.....I think I've added a couple of pounds just thinking about them!

OK as far as pants/bottoms go I recommend trying out several styles as your belly progresses. There was a period where the "demi" band (the kind with about 2.5 inches of stretchy waistband) was really annoying/uncomfortable to me because the band kept flopping over in half which made it extra tight. During that period I really liked the "underbelly" style. I couldn't ever bring myself to wear the kind that went over the whole belly though. I've also heard really great things about those Swelly Belly/Bella Band things too.

Lindsey and I have not experienced an ectopic pregnancy, but we have had a miscarriage and a "chemical pregnancy". These experiences were very difficult for us. Lindsey spent a lot of time reading books on the subjects, participating in online discussions and communities on www.thenest.com, and praying. I tried to help her cope and be supportive, but I didn't do as good of a job as I could have. This has been one of my largest failures as a husband. The miscarriage was very hard for both of us as it would have been our first child. I had told my coworkers (over 100) that I was expecting, then had to let them all know of our loss. Thinking of our loss still makes me sad today and it has been more than 3 years. I think our healing didn't begin until the birth of our son as we tried not to get too exciting during the entirety of the pregnancy. We did have complications with the pregnancy (calcification of the placenta), but the birth went smooth and there were no other complications. Our two losses are still with us very closely though. Even earlier today Lindsey and I were talking about the chemical pregnancy as we have just started talking about wanting a second child. Basically, there are no easy answers or solutions when it comes to a tragic situation such as what you have experienced. If you are religious then take heart in that all things work toward good for those who believe. If you are not religious it might be a good time to speak with a religious counselor. I find that for any person it isn't our tragedies that define us but how we choose to respond to them. I know I originally didn't handle our experience in a way I am satisfied with, but I have changed my actions and have opened my heart more to my wife. I think we are both much stronger today because of it. My prayers are with you and your family.

Maternity pants were one of my wife's favorite parts about being preg. She enjoyed the true comfort of the clothes verse any other pair of pants she ever wore. I'm sure you'll come to really enjoy them and will probably wear them long after giving birth. I also think it is cool that you have a "shared" preg. An experience like that is really cool. I've never visited the Crystal Palace, but after seeing that ice cream I think I'll go this weekend.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I have not had this unfortunate experience; however, my brother and his wife lost their pregnancy at 9 weeks in January 2008 as a "blighted ovum". We had just lost my grandmother, who was such a wonderful woman, and looking forward to having a new baby in the family was such a great thing! Then, the news came. We were all devastated! My sister in law's due date was July 15 - the day before my mom and aunt's birthday...they are not twins, but they share the same birthday, 9 years apart. (that was a tough day for us all...) We have all cried together, even though my brother and his wife live in Montana. It's hard to deal with loss, especially with an intelligent child in the home! I have tried to be honest with my son, who is 6. He has cried, asked questions, and talked about my grandma at length. It's a tearful conversation anytime with me....(I'm a cryer when I'm sad or happy). There is a great book that I sent to my brother and sister in law..."I'll hold you in heaven." I don't recall the author....I got it from a friend who lost her baby at 6 months - and had to go through labor and delivery....talk about rough! Give your family some time, and try to talk about it openly and allow your family to grieve together. One thing the grief counselor I talked with at Hoffman Hospice reminded me is that kids process death, loss and grief differently than we do. Check out Kevin Morrison's posts - he sent me one on my blog about my son's questions about death....It's awesome! Keep the kleenex close though, it's sweet and will touch your heart! If you want the author of the book I mentioned, let me know and I will send it to you...I'll have to ask my friend (or google it). Hang in there and give yourself some grace and time!

Everyday life at home.... : "Grocery shopping by myself....a LUXURY!"

Sometimes I really want to record my top ten "dont's" and then just replay them - over and over and over!! I have actually threatened to spank the kids when they misbehave so badly! UGH! Worse than shopping with the boys.....taking them BOTH with me to the doctor today to chat about my continued cough....three weeks after pneumonia and antibiotics, breathing treatments, plus the nice healthy shot of antibiotic from Urgent care! Even better....the boys got to sit and watch me be stuck to have a few vials of blood taken, plus a TB test....that hurt worse than the blood draw! THEN....they just HAD to follow me in to the restroom to watch me give a urine sample....they will surely choose the MOST unfortunate time to share this great bonding experience - UGH! I'm just hoping that I don't have Valley Fever, or some other nasty virus lurking in my lungs...hence, the barking seal remains! At least I can sort of yell now....until the tickle in my throat gets me coughing.

I suppose we all laugh so hard at our shared experiences - because we can see ourselves doing this MANY times over....like shopping with my boys when I have PMS and they are tired, cranky and only want to sample every thing in sight at Costco!

I too recommend Dr. Purdy. I have a little one who is TERRIFIED of the dentist due to a visit to a really Bad one. Dr. Purdy and his staff worked with him to ease his feers and now I don't dread the trips to the dentist and I dont have to bribe him with items to go anymore.

You are HILARIOUS! My eyes began to water at the "shopping cart on the back of your heels" part. Then, I was laughing hysterically after I read the "barking seal" part. Wow! That sounds like what I go through. I dread grocery shopping, or shopping anywhere for that matter. When my daughter is with me in the store, or anywhere really, I have to say, "No. Stop. Keep your voice down. Put it back. Don't touch. Get your thumb out of your mouth. We don't need that. I'm telling your dad." She thinks everything is funny until I whisper in her ear that I'm going to call Dad right now. Then she begins to cry. It's funny how I have to go 12 rounds with her, but my husband only has to call her name, once, and she'll stop in her tracks. I'm the one who screams for sanity. My husband is the most quiet person I know, and all he says is one word and everything is taken care of. So, yes, I love shopping alone as well.

Well, I took my now 8 year old to see Nemo when she was 3, but when the sharks came on we had to leave the theatre because she got freaked out. LOL! So we have to use our disgression even in G rated movies. It just goes to show what some kids have to endure...it is sad that those who are supposed to protect them aren't doing their job.

I haven't taken the boys to see any pg-13 or r rated movies at the theatre, but I will confess they have watched a few minutes of one that I didn't realize was so bad. The tv was turned off as soon as the really bad scene came up and all 4 of us jumped b/c we were scared - that did the trick. But it's not just the theatre movies, it's also the tv shows, everything is about violence or death or thrill seekers, what happened to the Brady Bunch-type shows? We have some friends up here on the mountain who own tv's but do not have satellite or cable, they watch rented movies only, I always thought that was weird, but they do spend alot of family time together and there isn't alot of normal household angry moments in their house.

i figure it's selfishness. i don't think you're going to get any takers on defending why a parent would do that because if someone could own up to their actions, i almost think they'd also own up to being accountable for what their kids watch.

in a similar situation, i offered the bad parent the option of letting me take the child out. that seemed to do the trick in convicting the parent and they left.

I know how you feel. It is hard to watch children in these situations. Our hearts break for them. And we feel so scrutinized, we feel like we're under the microscopes of the U.S., China, USCIS - you know what I mean. And we would never volunteer our children for such suffering so that we could enjoy a movie.

I can't defend the parents selfish actions in any case such as this! What is worse, is that the movie theatre manager wouldn't stand behind (or they don't have an attorney) to stand behind and kick the parents out with this terrified child! I suppose the children who are allowed to witness this violence thanks to the movie theatre and their lack of back-bone, are supposed to just watch and learn - when they return as angry young adults, teens with guns....and replay the violence that they have witnessed in the movies and learned (thanks to their irresponsible parents) WHO will accept the blame then? It won't be the parents - guaranteed! It won't be the movie theatre, or the movie industry - for SURE!

Unfortunately, these parents don't see that their child will remember this violence for the rest of her life....and chances are, she is witnessing more than this at home. I suspect that she probably knows more than we all can imagine about violence, swearing, nudity...get the picture? I wish there was some allowance in the Welfare and Institutions Code that would allow CPS to act on the behalf of this child, and at least get the parents to do a little PARENTING classes and put themselves in the child's mental and emotional state that THEY as parents have inflicted on their child....I know, most don't believe that CPS is the answer....However, who else will stand up for kids who are abused, neglected, left to fend for themselves and live in unspeakable conditions?

I have to say you are 100% right on....unfortunately, most of the parents who do these types of things would not be on raising baersfield and staying at home for the best their kids personal and emotional growth. Nevertheless, well said!

I don't think they are giving a second thought to their children's age. I don't think they are giving much thought beyond themselves in this situation... which is where the need for growing up themselves becomes apparent. The frustration multiplies for me, since right now I am two years into a four-year process of jumping through hoops trying to prove I am a qualified parent to adopt, while some people only had to... well, you know. And even Monkeys can do that.

Well luckily I don't have to defend myself here :) We didn't even take our son to see Indiana Jones, no matter how much he begged, because we just weren't sure - heck we're still holding off on Pirates of the Carribean. I have been faced with this situation twice. Once was years ago, in a violent movie, where the little girl (probably 5) was crying in the movie theater ... so pissed me off. Just this year we saw another movie that had some sexual content that I thought kids should definitely not be seeing,, I had to close my eyes during that part because I personally was uncomfortable watching it with two young children (maybe 6 and 8) sitting right in front of me. Kids have the rest of their lives to do adult things, I don't understand why some parents feel the need to start all this at such a young age!

I completely agree. I have a son who loves Batman but he's only 6. My husband and I went to see Dark Knight on Wednesday and we absolutely refused to take him to see the movie, regardless of how much he cried. One of my family members wanted us to take him to see the movie and yet again I refused. We hadn't seen much of the previews. When we went to get the kids from the sitter's I told them I was glad we didn't take our oldest. I told them why we were glad that we didn't take him.

Bravo! I totally agree. Not that I really get to go to movies that much anymore, but it always annoyed me in the past when I saw small children in R movies. I always wanted to go smack the parents. If you really want to see a movie and you can't find a sitter, wait until it comes out on video and watch it after the kids go to bed. That's what we do.

And the poor little girl... That just makes me so sad that her parents would A) take her to that movie, and B) not take her out of there when she was so scared. :(

This is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves! The exact same scenario you described happened to my husband and I a few years ago when we went to see that World Trade Center movie with Nicolas Cage. It was the saddest thing! And we went to see The Dark Knight Friday night and saw another small child in there with parents. We didn't hear any crying but that movie really scared the bajeesus outta me so I can't imagine a child of 6 or 7 in there!!!!!

Hey, I have a fantastic idea for a grocery store, bank, coffee and juice place, full service salon AND.....child care too!! Talk about one stop shopping! Think of how relaxed we'd be shopping (and how much extra money we'd spend....) if we had someone fun to entertain the kids and keep them off our legs, out of the grocery cart and out of the food we were buying. Maybe we SAHM's should become mom-epeneurs and have the first one of it's kind? If only I had unlimited money....

You know how they have banks and dry cleaners in some grocery stores? They should put salons in there. Then we could have a one stop shop for pedicures and groceries!

I usually work my shopping trip around DH's days off, just so I can do it without my son running crazy through the store and touching everything, and to avoid having my daughter whining and screeching because she wants to hold/eat/play with everything I put in the cart. LOL I even love sneaking over to the Goodwill used bookstore for a few minutes on the way to the store to browse the shelves ALONE. I must lead a boring life too. *giggle*

We went for the first time in March, and our son really enjoyed it. :) A Bug's Land at California Adventure was fun for him and he also really enjoyed Toon Town at Disneyland. Our daughter (who had just turned 1) liked the Finding Nemo Submarine ride the most. Enjoy! :D

when ethan is a bit older and wants to go to disneyland more often, you might want to consider the so cal annual passport. it's 120 dollars, just an extra 21 dollars for the whole year. of course you can only go on weekdays, but we've never had a problem with that.

Thanks for sharing! I think great pediatricians are hard to find so it is nice to hear from someone who's really happy with the one they have.

I take my children to Dr. Bhogal. She is located off 34th street near Memorial Hospital. I would recommend her as well. She is the only doctor my children have ever had who calls to follow up and see how they are doing, if needed tests have been completed, etc. I love that!

"Rolling" is a term that refers to grappling. We're rolling around on the mats fighting. My ribs have been sore because as part of the MMA (mixed martial arts) practice I have been participating in strikes are included. We strike, submit, choke-out (if the person doesn't tap), light kick, figure-four leg lock, and many of the other niceties involved in MMA sports. It is kind of hard to heal when so much contact is involved. After Thursday's Yoga session my ribs feel about 95% better, though sneezing and coughing still isn't as fun as it used to be. All-in-all it feels pretty good though.

I totally agree!!! It has to be fun and you will have to be patient because it will not happen overnight. I sing a "clean up song" with my kids and I clean up with them the first few times. Barney has a Clean Up song you can sing... google it if you need lyrics and tunes. Or you can make up your own clean up song with her. You can also try making a game out of it... and always reward her for doing it. I started training my daughter to help me clean up as early as 18 months... I showed her where all the toys go after playing and all toys needs to be put away before bedtime. I did the same thing with my son. Now when I come to their room at night all I have to do is tell them it's almost bedtime and it's time to clean their room! When they are done they call me and show me how good they did their chore!!! Then off we go to do their bedtime ritual!!! It takes a while but they will learn the routine and it is not impossible!!!

I do let my kids mess their room up when they are playing or have friends over... but they all have to clean up together when they are done playing and before their friends leave. I also remind them to put toys back in their boxes/designated spots when they are done with a toy(s) before they play with another one. Most the time they remember... so that works out for me.

Think of fun ways to do it and always praise and reward her!!! She will be doing it on her own before you know it!!!

I have to agree with many of the posters here....I had to avoid pull-ups like the plague to get the potty training accomplished! Throw them away and only have big boy underwear, if you are brave enough. The peeing on the carpet is a power struggle. My oldest did that more than once. He is a strong willed little guy (has been since day 1). When we moved into our newer home, we had the carpets cleaned and that was my final snapping point...to see him introducing his younger brother to peeing on the carpet! This was his way of showing me his unhappiness with our move away from his only home...even though he loves it now! None the less, he still peed on the carpet (with 3 year old brother helping initiate the carpet....)!!! So, their punishment was to help me clean it up, wash everything that required washing (play rugs - one of which went in the trash instead of being washed) and then they lost their favorite toy for a really long time!

A friend of mine used a brand new set of play tools to get her 4 year old to finally potty train. She kept to the program and he was trained in less than two weeks. (Not sure about night time....) The motivation worked for her because he was just too lazy to take a minute out of playing. Another suggestion for your little bag of tricks...try buying the rubber (plastic) training pants that will protect your carpet, but make it unconfortable for him to stay wet for long. They have elastic around the legs and can be pretty uncomfortable if you want to make them....that may be the ticket. My oldest hated them, especially once he wore big boy underwear! Good luck, and remember....it's only for a short time!

That's standard protocol for any child....get sick with fever, throw up, and cough all night....by 10 a.m. they'll be running around and fine - especially if you head to the doctor's office! Glad to be part of this club also!! Mine tend to do this; but, most of the time....they still have the issues (they just try to pretend they feel better)....like the ear infection we went to the doctor with the day before 4th of July. Kiddo said, "I'm fine." we went to the doc and she said, "Swimmer's ear...no swimming for a couple of days." What I want to know is how do they make the fever go away without tylenol? Can they just turn it on and off? Maybe we should study this phenomenon.....?

If you are like most parents, you hold off to see if things clear up on their own...sometimes they do (we always forget about those) and sometimes they don't....Hang in there!! Hope she's feeling better today, and you get the first appointment with the pediatrician this morning!

this reminds of how my back was killing me for two days straight after i showed my ethan how to do canon balls in the pool. who would have thought water could cause pain?? seriously...water! hold on, the physics of the act are now coming to me. yes, yes, there is a whole lot of force being slammed into my bottom as it makes contact with the water, shifting my spinal cord up, and yup, now i understand why my back was hurting.

i'm curious though, what's "rolling" and why does it make your ribs hurt?

how true. having trained to be a lawyer, i thought i would only find fulfillment in working with the big boys, being a professional. once my little ethan was born though, it only felt natural to become a stay at home mom rather than bringing home a huge salary.

and, if i'm being totally honest, both my husband and my marriage has improved since i am no longer the one who out-earns him. so, tradition works for us. in my experience, it's true what is in the Bible. Men are supposed to be the providers and women are supposed to be the nurturers. and despite the fact that certain circumstances prevent such, if most people really search for what would make them most happy, it would be more of the traditional model.

Thanks for bringing up the point!

My son, James, is 2 1/2 years old. He runs fast, climbs on everything, and now he knows how to swim. I do realize that they grow up fast. Too fast. It seems like only yesterday he was a little, slobbery baby "going to town" in his little bouncer. I do realize that MY BABY is not going to be a baby for much longer. As hard as that hits me, you know what hits even harder? When my 12 year old rolls his eyes at me or when he decides to go MIA when he is supposed to be on his way from a friends house. On those days when I am slowly driving down every street, on every block in my neighborhood, looking for a couple of kids strolling down the street and praying that one of them is mine and that he is safe (so I can stop being terrified that something has happened to him and can finally be mad at him for not being where he is supposed to be) I realize that these transitions are just the beginning. This is just the start for both of my babies and I actually am excited for all of us.

Yes, I have to agree with NoahJ. We had been considering changing insurance to save some money...and when I found that the insurance carrier we were considering didn't cover Shah and Santiago - we stayed with the current carrier at a higher premium. They are well worth the extra cost in insurance to make sure our sons asthma is under control and we understand exactly what to do and when. Although, there are other amazing pediatricians in Bakersfield and I'm sure there is one on your insurance provider list of the same calliber. As I suggested, you may contact your insurance carrier directly and ask if you are not able to find someone on the list, what process do you follow to express your desire to have a different doctor, what recourse do you have and how might you get a doctor added to the list? Sometimes there are ways to get new doctors onboard.....just a thought!

When we were visiting my brother in MT., my then 18 month old needed stitches (my brothers dalmation snipped as soon as we arrived and he had a nice gash that needed medical attention...) Anyway, I had never seen such pleasant service, quick triage and down to earth doctors. (I was a mess the entire time!) I actually wrote the administators of the hospital once we got home and my son's wound healed without further complications to thank them for their wonderful service.

We see Dr. Shah and Dr. Santiago for our son and I have to say that I have never been more impressed with a doctor's office in my life (although I had to receive medical treatment from an emergency center in Sacramento and they are highly impressive). They are very kind, very helpful, great bedside manner, and they explain everything crystal clear.

So true! Six years ago, I had a new born baby boy - he's now 6 and going into first grade! Something else to make me feel older....my nephew just turned 12 years old....it seems like yesterday he was running around our house naked as a jay bird after his bath.... as we baby sat him while my sister-in-law had her second child, now 10! To add age to me already, the first born grandchildren in my husband's family are now in college! They are 21 and will be 20 in December. They were just toddling in diapers - and one was just born - when I came into their lives....I was talking to my sister-in-law about this exact topic this morning, as we talked about the party being planned for Nate's 12th birthday. Yikes, in 6 more years, he'll be 18 and I'll have a 12 year old and 10 year old! Time seems like it has just hit fast forward since children...cherish the little things, like hand prints on the walls, windows and bathroom mirrors....soon they'll be gone and the kids won't want you to hug or kiss them in front of their friends anymore!

Dr Shah and Dr Santigo at Southwest Pediatrics on Truxton are wonderful. I went there when I was preganet for a prebirth interview and my son has gone there ever since. Shaw is usually really busy but santigo shares the office and is always good about getting anyone in even on a last minute basis. There is occasionally a wait so i Suggest making early morning appointments if it works with your schedule.

OOPS sorry didn't see the part about not taking your insurance. I would ask shah's office if they could recommend anyone who may take your insurance. the medical community is a close knit one in Bakersfield and I am sure they could point you in the right direction.

Too bad your insurance won't cover Dr. Shah and Dr. Santiago. They are the best! We switched to their group a little over a year ago and I have been 100% satisfied. They are up on the latest with all of their patients needs (for example, my youngest has had asthma issues and Dr. Santiago has kept me up to date on the latest and best treatments. She has changed medications and played around with them in order to keep his asthma managed and in control - NOT just for emergency treatment, she believes in the best management to ensure the best quality of life for him. Most impressive to me....) I will go in with a list of questions and she will sit and answer everyone of them and tell me why she wants to do this, and what to do if he has problems. They are open on Saturday mornings, and during the holidays when you would sit in Urgent Care...they are there during limited hours.

Finding a pediatrician that will support breastfeeding can be a challenge. I breastfed both of my children to 12 months....nearly 13 with my second, he didn't want to give it up! The oldest was a lazy feeder, so I pumped and gave it to him in a bottle. Supplemented with rice cereal since he was a very hearty eater, and gave him solid (home made baby food) at an early age. I had a pediatrician that didn't agree with my philosphy, so...I read, researched and did what I thought was best. (plus, having family that was knowledgeable and suggested solutions to my problems helped too.)

I'm not sure if you are able to request physicians be added to your network; at one time, we did have that option to request certain doctors. If you have a limited list of physicians to choose from, put the names out there and see what parents say about their experiences. When I was searching, I asked every mom I met - asked every friend I had that was a mom, and I went on a few visits with them and their kids. Since most doctors are too busy to interview with new parents, this is a great way to see their patient/parent interaction skills and see what you like or dislike about the office, staff and bed side manners of the doctor. Good luck!

Dr. Anthony Thomas

(he calls his practice The Kid Shop), who's downtown. We have friends who still see him. We really liked him, very personable, knowledgeable and down to earth.

Well, I have tried many a time to get my boys to keep their rooms neat and tidy...usually, punishment doesn't work AT ALL with mine. I have gotten things organized, and then they have a play date and mess it all up (my kids are now 4 and 6) and we have neighborhood kids here most of the time...they run between the houses and play at each other's house. Get things cleaned out and organized at her level....pictures and printed names on clear boxes, little cubbies, etc. Since your daughter is 5, she will be in Kindergarten this year, right? My oldest finished Kindergarten this May and he is now doing a pretty good job of cleaning up his room (with motivation of an allowance or a treat...like a fishing trip with dad, or a trip to the dollar store to get a fun toy HE chooses). Making it fun is what has helped me, singing songs, giving them music and letting them clean on their own, whatever you can create to make it fun! Start out slow with her and don't expect it all at once. I am working on chores with the boys (making their beds daily, helping with laundry - must be put in the laundry hamper....NOT on the floor!) Toys are usually picked up at the end of the day, or playtime, and put in their places. I am not militant...but, this is helpful in organizing the toys.

Try this...Use a dry erase board, or create a chart with days of the week, and blanks for chores...use it to keep track with stars or stickers of some sort. I use something like this to keep track of each child's accomplishment in keeping their rooms neat and tidy - we take fun trips to Dewar's for a SPECIAL reward if they are really good! Try positive reinforcement of good deeds. Praise the heck out of her when she picks things up. Try not to flip out too often....(speaking from a fellow neat-freak!!) relax and help her understand how important it is to keep her room clean and organized when school starts. And remember, having fun is the most important part of learning! Let me know how it works for you....Good luck! Sonya

Our family goes to Dr. Perry Jue on Commerce Center Dr. Dr. Phillips (his partner) is also very pleasant. (Turn at AAA and go toward Paragon). They are all amazingly patient and gentle with us all. I would recommend them highly!

Also, I know Dr. Rolland Lam personally and he is FANTASTIC with kids! His family is part of our preschool co-op (SCNS) and he opened his office up to our kids for a field trip....20+ preschool aged kids! Very relaxed, introduced all the kids to his staff and did a little exam to familiarize the kids with his exams. (I have talked to a couple of families who go to Dr. Lam and they rave about him...only positive things!) I hope this helps.

I love the way that God works. Sometimes we find his blessings in his beautiful works, other times his blessings are found in the ravages of entropy. I think the important thing is to look either way and find how God has decided to reach out and touch us.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God.

I agree. My little guy is about to turn two. I'm like, "Holy cow, it has been two years!" I can't believe how fast it has been going. I have to say that I do enjoy my son a lot more now than I did when he was a rug rat. He walks, he parrots words, he says silly things, and he is a goofy little guy. It is kind of hard to image life just a little over two years ago before I knocked-up my wife. Things sure are a lot more complicated, but I think it is worth it. I just know that if I don't pay attention I'm going to be at his college graduation before I know it.

Well, I don't know if "congratulations" is in order, but in some regard I believe it is. Congratulations that the morning sickness is over, that you've started to gain weight, and that your pregnancy is going well. I think those are all things to be excited about. Any exercise you can squeeze in helps as I think it will help you feel better about yourself. Plus, it will help you "spring-back" after giving birth. I'll pray that the rest of the pregnancy goes fantastic and that your tailbone feels better. That isn't a fun part to have hurting. My wife had a lot of pain there when she was knocked-up. I guess that is where the husband comes in... lower back messages to take care of the wife.

To be honest, just about every single one of my mom friends, takes their kids to Dr. Purdy - as do I! :) We love their office, they have great entertainment there for the kids and the best part is that they start off slow with the first appointment and gently work them into the cleaning and such.

LOL~ My 3 year old does that to us still. I had the hardest time figuring out his word for "air conditioners" the other day. It sounded like "ish codishuningers"... Once I figured it out it made me giggle... He was telling me there were "too many air conditioners" on the motorhome outside of our window...

I Have to Laugh or I'll Cry : "Marriage is Like a Slipcover"

Hi Heather! I have slipcovers on my couch too! I did find a way to make them stay tucked longer than usual... yes, it stays put long enough you don't have to tuck everyday or every time the kids get on it. All you need is a magazine and a rubberband (elastic bands). You can also use those catalogs you get in the mail that you will probably never look at and just end up in the trash. Roll the magazine or catalog so you form a tube. Use the elastic band to keep it rolled. When you tuck your slipcover into the crevices, tuck the fabric deep in the crevices with the tubes/rolled magazine tubes. This should keep them tucked tight. Tuck as many "tubes" as you need to keep the slipcover from slipping. Notice how they stay in place longer. I swear my slipcovers stay on longer then they use to!!! Check out this site... they have foam tubes that they recommend for use exactly the same way and for the same purpose!!! Mine is just a cheaper way of doing it!!!

http://www.stretchandcover.com/2faq/faq-how-to-slipcovers.php

Too bad your niece had her food/snacks confiscated...Must have had a militant security officer checking the bags!! I have done this twice (last in April this year) and never had issues. We have a small soft-sided insulated bag that will hold a few sandwiches in ziplocs and blue ice. As long as you don't have glass or anything breakable, they shouldn't confiscate it. Besides, they have a picnic area for those who choose to bring their own food....that makes no sense to confiscate food from families. I also had to have my son's asthma medication, one was an inhaler, one was an oral steroid. They didn't even bat an eye at that.

One other issue my SIL and her son ran into with security...make sure if you leave the park, you have your hand stamped AND you keep your ticket in your possession! They had their hand stamped; met us for dinner in Downtown Disney, and then went back to the park...Security wanted to see their tickets and stamps. Their tickets were on their way back with her hubby to the hotel (without their knowledge....) Thank goodness for cell phones! Maybe the same security guard also checked the bags of bushelandapecks' niece? Hope you have a great time at Disneyland!!

Too cute! I get it now....A scary monster!!! ;) That should be recorded or at least written in the baby book....Our oldest is a gadget guy....and has been since he could crawl (even while being pushed around in the stroller). He LOVES garage doors, tools, and anything power tool related! When he was learning to talk, he kept saying, "MAMA....AHHHH JOE, AHHHH JOE!" We coldn't figure out what he wanted, what he was saying or what an AHHH JOE was. Then, we were walking down the street in Pismo Beach and he saw a whole line of AHHHH JOE'S! AND, Lo and behold....the light came on! The AHHHH JOE was...... Garage door!! We laughed so hard at the pride in our accomplishment! We actually figured out the mystery! And we still tell this story to our son, who is 6 now....this is one to stay in the family books! (He still has to stop and watch the garage door open or close and he won't rest until he gets to push the remote button!!! ;)

Congrats on earning your expert interpreter merit!

Once again, Thanks for the chuckle! I think you covered most of the ones I would have thought of, except I don't do rectal thermometers either....yuck! I guess the only one I can add is this: when you take your sick kiddo to the pediatrician when you are sick also, and then make a run to the Pharmacy for their prescriptions as well....

One more I recall from my breastfeeding days....When you can get up from your recliner, keep your breastfeeding child latched on, and retrieve your 2 year old from the kitchen counter - which he has scaled like a professional mountain climber - before he falls.....all the while you try not to scare either of them with your "don't move any further....." All without missing a beat or losing that suction! Talk about multi-tasking!

One more, just for laughs....When your back seat has more types of snacks inside the carseat base or smashed into the carpet or upholstery than you can recognize.....goldfish, m & m's, ritz crackers, sugar free lollipops from the doctor....and many more than I care to name!

I would recommend takeing your own only because your tired kids can ride in them as you walk back to your hotel. Also, we take our own b/c it has cup holders (good for kiddo and us!), it reclines all the way and our storage is better. Dland stroller storage is not great, so I've heard.

Put something unique (tie a distinct piece of fabric or soemthing) on your stroller so you can identify it in the sea of strollers parked outside rides.

Don't know if they have doubles.

Oh, you are going to have so much fun!!!!

EVEN if you are only visiting one park...take the stroller with you! We took our single stroller in April for our youngest (4 years) who was not 100% since he had just finished a major asthma issue and was recouping from bronchitis...and we rented a second one for the older son who got tired with the heat....for 10 bucks - it was worth my sanity!! They have the sports style stroller (don't know about the double, but you can call and ask) and they do have storage underneath and a place for your family name. We sold our double stroller long ago (the oldest is so tall, he outgrew it quickly...) so, it was a great option for us. Walk from across the street, it's not that far. We were there in April, stayed a distance away, but took the trams there and back to the hotel again. My suggestion for food....take snack type stuff for the kids in a backpack. Water to keep hydrated in refillable bottles for each of you. We like to take our own sandwiches made fresh that morning at the hotel. I like to get places with the refrigerators and have cereal and milk in the a.m. Crackers, goldfish, juice, fresh fruits or whatever your kids like are good to keep with you for the munchies. The lines for bag checks move fast if you have your zippers handy and are organized. In my opinion, the food there is way over priced and not that great. Take some peanut butter, jelly, a loaf of bread and lunchmeat for adults...chips and drinks. Save the money for treats for the kids, ice cream, T-shirts or a nice dinner away from Disneyland.

SUNSCREEN AND HATS are a must! We took sunscreen and applied it more than usual - I got a little pink, and had to buy a hat the second day to keep from burning my scalp (and nose too). I paid double for a ball cap at Disneyland, but got a cool souvenier that I love to wear now...If you decide to get a second day, California Adventure has a great area for the kids and is pretty family friendly as well. They have Playhouse Disney Theater, A Bugs Life land, and an old fashioned carnival area that my sons had a blast playing the Fishing Game - every kid won something! The Big Ferris Wheel is neat, if you get a car that doesn't spin or swing on the track. (plus, the line is super short for those cars!!)

Fast Passes...are awesome!! They are free at the rides that offer them. This is how they work: You take your tickets (one for each person in your party) up to the fastpass station at the rides that offer them, slide them in and you get a return ticket with a time on it. When you return, enter the Fast Pass line and you get on the ride in about 5 minutes or less....VERY worthwhile with kids!! Nemo doesn't offer fastpass. Do that first if your kids want to ride Nemo. The line was too long for us to wait, since we didn't get there until later in the day. Also, visit Toon Town early in the day. It closes early (8 p.m.) I think. Lots of fun there for the kids!

Have a blast! Take your camera and enjoy the fun! Also, I have heard that they will let you in early, if you are there like an hour or so before the park opens. My SIL did this (they like to get up early and their kids are older). We sleep in a little more and take our time in the morning...I'm not sure of all the details, so maybe ask those who go a little more frequently....Most of all, enjoy the day!

Slowing Down the Blur : "Disneyland"

Good plan on the one park for the first visit :) It can be a bit overwhelming to do both in one day!

Oh and the fast passes are at the entrances of the rides that offer them. And they are free!

Oh dear I am a disneyland nutcase! :)

be prepared to have your bags searched before you get in the ticket line.

you probably haven't experienced the new parking structure and tram to the park excitement. surprisingly pretty organized

you can actually "plan" your trip on disneyland.com by creating a list of favorites and then printing it out. You can also find out the height requirements for certain rides.

if you are going to california adventure you should definitely check out the Playhouse Disney show! Super fun :) The bug's land is really fun too and I have to 2nd the food - FYI homemade tortillas and margaritas YUMO

definitely would suggest doing nemo first if you want to get it out of the way, fast passes are cool if you don't mind coming back when it's your time.

I think during the summer the fireworkds are actually everynight. plus the fantasmic show is WAY cool :)

Good luck! I hope you guys have lots of fun!!!! I'm <strike>SUPER</strike> just a tad jealous!

We will be there on Tuesday. We are renting a room at the Best Western across the street the night before and the night after. That way we can walk out of the park for a short nap in the afternoon and then stay later into the night before the kids crash out. We are not doing CA Adventure, just good old Dland. How much are fast passes and where do we get them? Just at the park entrance? Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm looking forward to my kids having a blast. We have a countdown on the whiteboard in the kitchen and they have been counting down the days for the last month and a half. They can't wait!

Pelly, do you want to come by The Californian at 3 p.m. Friday for a "luau" celebrating the launch of Kern Life 2008? I'm bringing fruit, cupcakes and leis for people to wear around. (Just the leis - I hope people don't wear the fruit or cupcakes!) It would be great to see you and say thank you AGAIN for all of your hard work! — Jen

(ps ... this invite is for Pelly only - she put a lot of time into Kern Life!)

I look forward to the day I can take my kid(s) to Disneyland and experience the park all over again through child's eyes. Have a wonderful time. Enjoy every moment and don't get caught up in the rush of having to see it all.

if you can, go on a weekday.

the longest line you'll encounter is the new nemo submarine ride. do that first thing if you don't want to waste the rest of your day in line. no fast pass for this one since we were there in february.

if it's the kids' first time, they won't know if they missed a ride...so take it easy and enjoy the moments: their reactions to seeing Mickey for the first time is precious and should be captured. friday and sat nights at 9pm = firework show.

if you haven't booked a hotel, go via priceline. you can get a 3-4 star hotel for around $70 per night in the disneyland area.

have fun!

1. Don't forget the sunscreen.

2. Disneyland has healthy snacks available now, so you don't have to junk food it all day.

3. Fast Pass for rides that are popular

4. Take or rent a stroller - it's great for cameras, jackets, video camsand tired kids - and we've never heard of anyone having stuff stolen from strollers as D-land.

5. Are you going to CA Adventure? If so, Ariel's Grotto is a must. Princesses come around to visit all the tables. Call now to make a reservation.

6. expect Small World to be closed. They are refinishing the surface - not to reopen till fall or winter, I think.

How long are you going to be there?
