Tell My Son Autism is a Fad....

I was chatting with my friend and fellow Mom-of-a-child-on-the-Spectrum and heard - lo and behold - they choose not to carry autism awareness fabric at one of our local fabric retail establishments because the manager says "Autism is a fad."

This is a brilliant example of what our children face every day.

The structure of my son's brain is "a fad".

I am glad I wasn't the one talking to this manager of said store. I told my friend I was going to go attempt to buy some fabric there, simply so I could meet with the manager there and see if I could find out her name and more details of her opinion.

I suppose we could say hazel eyes are a fad. Or perhaps left handedness is a fad or maybe... well, who knows.

I am frustrated. Perhaps frustration is a fad.

Thanks, Mom2CandC. I tried to comment on your blog about the swimming frog, but your blog wouldn't let me. I enjoyed your writing and wanted to let you know. :-)

Well, appaerntly ignorance is NOT a fad.  Unfortunately, this manager of a local fabric store has most likely never been touched by a life that has been changed by autism.  Perhaps, this opinion should be shared with all who have a family member with autism in Kern County.....maybe then, they will opt to carry the autism awareness fabric and see that autism is not a passing fad, or simply a new "catch phrase".  Perhaps if this manager sees that there are many who have been touched with autism, she will reconsider her comments.  The only way to enlighten the ignorant is through education!  Good luck with this one!
